The Tybee Island Sea Turtle Season has begun and it’s a wonderful time to visit!  Our sea turtles are some of our most beloved visitors this time of year, so here are a few tips to show them sea turtle love!

We ask that our property owners change their outdoor lighting to turtle friendly bulbs and install proper blinds and shades to block out interior lights.  Please keep all light sources and reflections off the beach by using light shields, blinds or by keeping fixtures low to the ground. Only use red LED flashlights and headlights on the beach at night.  Lights and fires may discourage sea turtles from nesting and lead baby turtles away from the water.

Please take beach furniture, cabanas, tents, and ALL beach equipment with you when leaving the beach. Do not store anything on the beach or in the dunes.  Beach equipment may harm, disturb, or trap nesting or baby sea turtles and disturb the dune system.

 Please clean up and pick up any litter, whether it’s yours or not.  Litter can harm sea life and disturb nesting sea turtles.

Third Thursdays on Tybee!

The final Spring performance for Third Thursdays on Tybee will be with Brenda Morie.  Jazz flutist and vocalist, Morie, has always embraced music and is an accomplished performer with her tour history, formation of the popular jazz-rock fusion band, Terra, and recordings.  Morie is also well known through numerous television and radio appearances and feature films.  As an award winning musician, she has recorded with the legendary Ben Tucker and is very much looking forward to performing for you at Third Thursdays on Tybee.

 

You will enjoy this “Outdoor Listener’s Delight” with Morie as she shares her contemporary flair with her extraordinary vocals and jazzy flute playing downtown Tybee.

Bring a chair, stroll the shops, or grab a bite for dinner as you enjoy music in the Main Corridor.

The 2012 EVP Pro Volleyball Beach Tour is coming to Tybee Island this weekend!  The EVP is excited to bring their EVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour to Tybee for the third year in a row. This action packed beach volleyball event is this Saturday, May 12th, and it’s a must see for athletes and spectators.

Tybee’s Beach Bum Open will feature the top City vs City athletes and free agents. The EVP welcome party lets the teams see their match placement and a chance to meet the EVP Tour staff. It’ll be another great event this year at Tybee Island with more great give away and exciting new sponsors and our other fun events to join in on including the Bump in the Bucket and Spike the T-Shirt and Prizes for the complete beach event.

The 2012 Jr. Spike n’ Splash Tour is simply the best option for 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U boys and girls teams. As the official Junior Beach Volleyball Tour of the EVP, each player is guaranteed elite competition amongst the top players across country.

Give me a call and come on down this weekend to earn more of your EVP Tour points to go to the Nationals and World finals to compete in this years exciting competition.  Just don’t spike the ball at my head or kick sand in my drinks!

You’ll love the beautiful pink colors of our Tybee sunrises and sunsets and now you can even help Paint Tybee Pink!

On May 5th, come enjoy an afternoon into evening 10K walk in beautiful Tybee Island (5k option available as well)!  There will even be a Sunset Ceremony at Fisherman’s Walk pier, then each walker will receive a pink glow stick and will travel the last mile along the beach (optional).  The walk will finish at the Tybee Pier and Pavilion with a Celebration of Life Party complete with TropRock artist Jim Asbell playing on the Pier!

There’s a $50 registration fee with no fund raising minimum and anyone who raises at least $500 will get their registration fee waived!! Fund raising is the lifeblood of any charitable organization, so fund raising and sponsorships are strongly encouraged to help make a bigger impact on the cancer community in Coastal Georgia! The event also needs crew members to come out and help the walkers along their journey, so if you can’t walk, please consider volunteering as a crew member.  

Proceeds from Paint Tybee Pink will be specifically set up to provide direct assistance to patients battling breast cancer.  Many of these worthy recipients may be hourly workers who have to take time off from their job for surgery, recovery, and follow up treatment. This sometimes puts them in a circumstance where not enough income is there to cover their monthly obligations.  Breast cancer patients fighting for their lives against this disease do not need the added stress of worrying about financial obligations they were able to meet before breast cancer struck!

Proceeds from this walk will benefit LibLines Breast Cancer Fund at the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute of Memorial University Medical Center, Savannah, GA.   Come join us and let’s Paint Tybee Pink!  Give me a call and I’ll help you choose just the right beach house or condo, so you’ll be close to the action!

It’s the perfect time for Tybee Time and Grand Wine at the 2012 Tybee Wine Festival!

The Tybee Post Theater  will host the annual wine festival April 12-15, offering something for everyone.  For instance, the signature event will be the Grand Wine Tasting on Saturday from 2 PM-5 PM.  Located on the Tybee Lighthouse grounds, this event will feature tastings and samplings of international wines, craft beers and tastes from our famous Tybee area eateries.  It will also feature a silent auction and a limited edition 2012 Tybee Wine Festival glass. There will be live music featuring Julie Wilde & The Bohemian Dream Band and Marshall, Tanner & Gill.

This year’s festival closes with a special champagne tasting and sit-down brunch, surrounded by the fresh air and breezes of the Atlantic Ocean. Champagne tasting will begin at 12:30pm and brunch, including mimosa and dessert bars, will be served at 1:00pm.  The menu includes Baked Eggs with Cheese & Chives,  Local Shrimp & Grits with Andouille Sausage Gravy,  Banana Pecan, Blueberry Lemon and Raspberry Streusel Muffins,  Fresh Fruit,  Sour Cream Pound Cake with Fresh Strawberry Sauce, New York  Style Cheesecake and Rich Chocolate Cupcakes!  Live music with Alberto Puentes completes the island ambiance!

Did you know that Tybee Island has been honored as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists?

Well, it’s true and by earning this designation we have joined an elite group of communities across the United States. After careful review and consultation with local cyclists, the League recognized Tybee Island at the Bronze level, celebrating the City of Tybee Island’s commitment to bicycling.   Tybee is one of 179 communities in 44 states recognized by the League of American Bicyclists and one of only two communities in Georgia to earn this four-year honor.

I enjoy seeing my Tybee friends and visitors out riding the island’s bike routes and on the beach throughout the year.  But, remember this is Tybee, so don’t be surprised when you see someone towing their kayak or a small boat on a trailer behind their bike.  You’ll also be impressed at the bikes that are decorated with flowers and lights and that have unusual horns.  Heck, you’re just as liable to see island residents arrive by bike at social events, all decked out in their finery.  Most of our bikes have their own cup holders, but just remember to fill them with plastic cups only.

You don’t even have to worry about choosing which friends to join you on a bike ride.  Invite all of your friends and hop on the Tybee Island Slow Ride!  It really comes in handy if you’re someone who can’t pedal and drink from your plastic cup at the same time.  Just hop on, pedal when you can and let the driver worry about keeping it in the road.

I’m all about the joy of managing the business of each day.  There’s always an email or a phone call that is waiting for a response.  I  make it a point to check on our beautiful beach homes and condos and touch base with our  wonderful staff.  I look to hear from our guests, both checking in and checking out, to make sure I’ve met their expectations.  It’s the business I’ve chosen and the business I love.  I’ve also learned I have to make time to be about the business of things that give me joy, too.

Tybee Island is a beautiful barrier island and today is just one of those days when I get great joy from walking the island and checking to see how it’s doing.  Our beautiful beaches are a given and there’s no more wonderful sight than to watch families and couples and children and friends as they enjoy the waves or just lay about in the sun.

For me, it’s all about wandering off the beach and strolling along the paths and trails that connect the different parts of the island.  Little cuts that draw my eyes out among the Spartina grass and nest sightings up among the trees.  Sometimes, walking with good friends who share the joys of island living and other times just listening for the quiet whisperings of nature’s conversations with the wind and sun and waves.

Yes, I’ve learned a very important part of my day includes the business of finding joy in my life, so that I can continue to find joy in the business of taking care of our island, our homes, our guests and all those that come my way.  These are some of the joys of my day and I can’t wait for you to get here to share them with me!
